Why?

In this session, we will discuss inclusion: what it means for Process Educators and how we can deliberately incorporate this in our practice, whether our practice is in the classroom as part of a DDO, or in any other context.

Plan

Before the session:

1. Watch Chimamanda Adichie's TED talk (17 mins)
2. Take the implicit bias "Weapons IAT" test. First visit: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html then scroll down to click, “I wish to proceed” then click “Weapons IAT” button on the left edge of the screen
3. Complete the “Strategies for Inclusive Classrooms” exercise (this is on the Member's site so you'll need to log in to complete the survey).
4. Review the plans for Part A and Part B of the session, and prepare to contribute and participate.

Part A (Discussion: What is inclusion?)

During the session:

• Welcome and introductions
• Outcomes
  • Listen while withholding judgment about new and/or unfamiliar topics.
  • Identify the PE principles that embrace inclusion
  • Identify strategies for creating inclusive course environments
  • Brainstorm strategies for teaching inclusively
• Breakout groups: Discuss strategies for inclusive classrooms and post, on the appropriate forum topic, your team’s top 3-5 strategies a) you are currently using and b) you’d like to try
• Regather and share insights

Part B (Practice: How do I incorporate inclusion into my practice?)

During the session:

• Joseph will address what makes GGC (SST) different than other schools (faculty demographics are close to student demographics and county demographics)
• Outcomes
  • Identify our implicit biases and strategies to overcome them
• Breakout groups: Discuss implicit biases and how they impact the creation of inclusive spaces. There is a thread for 1) how implicit bias is related to creating inclusive spaces and 2) strategies for overcoming our biases.
• Closure and session assessment (5 min)
