This module attempts to demystify the concept of failure in the learning environment and illustrates how failure, when managed appropriately by faculty, can be a catalyst for the growth, development, and improved performance of the adult learner.”

(from 3.1.8 Letting Students Fail So They Can Succeed)

The Strategy: Permission to Fail As educators, our natural instinct is often to “jump in” and rescue a struggling student. However, the QLE methodology suggests a different approach:

Permit the Learner to Fail: Incorporate challenging tasks where failure is a possibility, such as complex group projects or campus scavenger hunts.

Avoid Enabling: Quick interventions provide momentary success but can hinder long-term growth. Ask yourself: “What action will produce the best long-term result for the person who is struggling?”.

The Outcome: Resilience and Success Allowing failure to happen in small, manageable steps empowers students.

Emotional Resilience: Experiencing these moments helps students build the “grit” needed to cope and respond to future challenges.

Turning Failure into Growth: The goal is to ensure failure is treated as a productive event on the road to success. When a student fails, help them pivot by making it a learning and growth experience.

Key Takeaway Setting high expectations (Step 6) is impossible if we don’t allow for failure. If we lower our standards to avoid student struggle, we ultimately lower their potential for achievement. Let’s give our students the space to fail—and the support to rise back up.

Discussion Point:

How can we distinguish between a “productive failure” that leads to growth and a failure that leads to disengagement?

“Creating a quality learning environment must include the opportunity for students to experience temporary failure on the road to success.
