Summary of Recent Board meeting work:

The AoPE Board Met on November 9th and the members were able to efficiently approve a contract for a replacement for Denna Hintze who had recently stepped down as Webmaster. The members reflected on the large role that the webmaster has played in keeping the organization running smoothly and also noted that the webmaster duties combined with the responsibility of the monthly newsletter is immense especially when that duty included motivating others to contribute. The members noted that we need to circle back and discuss the reinstatement of a Communication Committee and perhaps consider having a quarterly instead of monthly newsletter.

Denna Hintze kindly offered to mentor Knut Are to fulfill the role of webmaster and Patrick Barlow fashioned the approved contract for the webmaster role.  Denna Hintze retains her duties for the IJPE and a separate contract was approved for that purpose.

2023 Conference Update
President Elect
Wm Patrick Barlow

The 2023 Academy of Process Educators Conference is beginning to take shape. Your Conference Planning Team and the board are focusing on a new and improved conference model. We hope these innovations will make conference participation less expensive, more convenient, and meaningful to a larger number of our members.

This holiday update is intended to whet your appetite for attending and allow you to reserve the dates on your calendar. The board has approved a 2 day Online Live Conference to be held in June 2023. Subject to Board approval, the tentative dates for the summer conference will be June 9-10, 2023. Please note this is a Friday and Saturday to accommodate our colleagues who are teaching summer session courses.

The Planning Committee is working now to establish a theme focused on innovative ideas for strengthening student success. We are also reviewing the structure for the conference, as we seek more interaction, new ideas, and the latest data on student success. The theme currently under consideration will focus on “Closing the Gaps” including many differing gaps identified by Complete College America with whom we hope to partner in the future.

Information about registration, proposals for sessions, keynote speakers, election of new board members and the Annual Academy business meeting for all members will be finalized during the Academy Winter meeting in January. All members are welcome to attend the Academy Winter meeting which is also planned as a virtual three day event on January 3, 4, and 5, 2023.

We invite all Academy members to take this opportunity to join in on the efforts of the Board and Planning team. As a holiday gift, send any ideas you have for the conference to Patrick Barlow. Join us at the Winter Meeting for detailed discussions about the structure of the conference. This is YOUR conference and we want all of your voices joined in participation as we seek to create a meaningful experience for us all.

Who I am…
I am Knut Are Romann-Aas, a 56-year-old Norwegian, married to Denna Hintze. I have a certification as a Radio/TV- technician, half a Master’s Degree in Marketing and Service Management, and 18 years as a technician, the last 6 of which were as owner and manager of my own repair shop. I also have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, a Master’s Degree in Clinical Nursing, and 15 years as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. I also work part time as a teacher for Licensed Practical Nurses doing post-graduate studies online. In addition to that, I have my own little business doing welding, carpentry, and graphic design, but mainly sub-contracted work for Denna.

What I look like...

What I do…
I do a lot of things that may not be relevant to you. What’s relevant is web design, graphic design and layout, Moodle editing, technical editing, and animation videos. Much the same as what Denna does, in other words. Among the things I have done are: The Faculty Guidebook website, co-authored an article about Proximity Ethics and Process Education, and animation videos for learning modules for Pacific Crest, as seen in The Hall of Innovation video for the 2022 PE Conference.

Other than that…
My plan is to quit nursing altogether and divide my time between teaching and computer stuff. And maybe open a cat hotel (a luxury boarding kennel). When not working, I like snowboarding, kayaking, bicycling, and reading.

In closing…
Taking over for Denna is like coming on for Wayne Gretzky or Michael Jordan, but I’m happy to give it a try. But there are two things you need to know: My English and knowledge of Process Education are nowhere near good enough for me to produce original content. So, unlike Denna, I will not be able to help you out there. I still work as a nurse in a time zone several hours away, so I will not be able to give you Denna’s response time, either.

Regards,
Knut Are Romann-Aas
