Why?

This workshop aims to initiate a strategic dialogue concerning the PE Academy’s two key goals: financial viability and visibility of the PE philosophy and its concepts. PE’s evolutionary maturity of theoretical, applied and published/documented knowledge over the past three decades obligates a natural inquiry: how can we advance this knowledge through grants from public and private funders? Thus, the purpose of this two-fold approach is to first refresh and/or raise participant awareness, and next, use their feedback in determining the feasibility of the undertaking. In addition to help sustain the Academy’s financial security, a successful funding venture could potentially render multiple positive consequences: (1) help experiment the viability of various PE theories and concepts (2) help develop PE’s train-the-trainer team of experts for dissemination of the demonstrated concepts (3) as a viable source, help facilitate data accumulation capability to further advance the evidence-based research; and, (3) help further advance PE’s professional recognition across the diverse, multi-level educational landscape.

Resources

The grants.gov website and this sub-link provide a comprehensive understanding of the federal grants process, procedures and resources for a first-time visitor and experts alike.

This web-link highlights key differences between the grants process supported by public- and private-sector funders.

Since all academic research proposals are subject to IRB’s review and approval to ensure compliance with the standards of research ethics, this FAQs link serves as a quick refresher.

This example provides a quick and complete understanding of the grants management process for small nonprofit organizations such as the PE Academy.

Plan

Before the session:

  1. Review the information in the links from the resources described above.
  2. Answer these Exploration Questions on the forum for the session before the session begins.
    1. What are some critical elements to be included when writing a typical grant proposal the Academy might pursue?
    2. What are the gaps in the Academy capability to meet the needs for writing a competitive grant?

Part A (Interactive PPT presentation and discussion)

During the session:

  1. Welcome (2 min)
  2. Goals for the workshop’s Part A segment (3 min)

Goal 1: Using a PPT, share and explain the foundational essentials of public- and private-sector funding process and procedures.

Learning Objective: Familiarize and/or refresh participants’ overall understanding involving the grants-related basics.

Goal 2: Share and explain a basic non-profit institutional structure to initiate a functional grants management process.

Learning Objective: Inform and increase participant understanding through gap analysis using the Academy’s current landscape and resources.

Goal 3: Discuss key research methodologies vs. feasibility of initiating a PE pilot project.

Learning Objective: Participants will be able to determine various PE modules’ alignment with research methods to determine the most logical justification for funding.

  3. Interactive presentation and discussion (40 min)

Part B (Breakout group discussion of critical thinking questions)

During the session:

  1. Goals for the workshop’s Part B segment (3 min)

Goal 3: Conduct an inventory of the Academy’s current environment and resources from structural, expertise, and feasibility points of view.

Learning Objective 1: Secure the PE community’s feedback on Academy’s readiness toward the grant solicitation effort.

Learning Objective 2: Determine the subsequent steps as appropriate.

  2. Discussion of Critical Thinking Questions – respond on the session forum (35 min)
  3. (forum link for CTQs)
    1. What existing PE concepts, modules, and practices are best-suited for grant solicitation, even if as a pilot project?
    2. In response the question above, as a pilot project, what relevant research methodology would be best for articulation in a grant proposal?
    3. What basic structure is needed to initiate the PE Academy’s grant solicitation and management process?
  4. Closure: This will involve reflective writing or planning to connect workshop content or outcomes to individual goals, and completing the session assessment form (5 - 7 min)
