Monday morning: Team Based Learning

NOTES FROM JULIE ESTIS (Session Facilitator) TO MENTORS/TEAM LEADERS ON THE KICK-OFF TBL SESSION: Good afternoon, I look forward to seeing you all at the PE conference. I understand that you all will serve as team leaders, and conference organizers asked me to share a bit about the team-based learning session I will be facilitating on Monday morning.

The Process Education Primer Synopsis

Introduction to Team-Based Learning

The readings are available on the PE/CoTL Conferernce Resource site (Moodle site), but please reach out to your team members and encourage them to read these brief papers prior to the session on Monday morning. We will follow the Team-Based Learning (TBL) format: advanced preparation, individual readiness assurance test, team readiness assurance test, and 4S application activities.

The participant goals for the session include:

  • Share personal learning/growth outcomes with teammates
  • Describe the two premises of the PE philosophy
  • Relate constructivism and learning theory to PE
  • Explain self-directed learning
  • Apply the principles and beliefs of PE to educational practice
  • Describe the essential elements of Team-Based Learning
  • Develop team goals for the PE conference

Additional desired outcomes include forming teams, introducing team members, and setting the stage for an excellent conference experience.

For this session, the teams will work together through guided activities, but your role as a team leader will be specifically utilized toward the end of the session when teams will set their goals for the PE conference. Your guidance as an experienced PE Conference attendee will be helpful as you lead your team in establishing a set of goals you all hope to accomplish during the conference.

Throughout the remainder of the conference, there will be opportunities for you to meet with your team to reflect on what you've learned, evaluate your progress toward your goals, and prepare a team presentation for the final day of the conference.

Preparation is critical for gaining the most from the PE/CoTL Conference. Prepare by visiting the Conference Resources Site and reading the resources provided for each session you plan to attend.

As you're planning out your session attendance for the Conference, do you see simultaneous sessions and wish you could attend both?  Aren't you glad that someone else will be a recorder for that session? You can return the favor by volunteering to record a session that you attend. Recording is an opportunity to hone this professional skill, and to capture the learning and insights from a session you want to think more deeply about.
