This session introduces a framework for how we talk with our students, our colleagues, and others in ways acknowledge them as individuals and empower them toward transformational change. Further, the Academy of Process Educators is a volunteer organization, and as such can only thrive given an environment where interaction with each other is mutually beneficial. The way we talk impacts those interactions and can support us in working to achieve wildly audacious success together, yet as individuals.

Winter Meeting: Will YOU Be There?
Treasurer
Peter Smith

We are scheduled to hold the winter meeting arriving on the evening of January 1 and ending at noon on January 5. We will be staying in the Pear Tree Inn near the St. Louis airport. The Inn has a shuttle service and is near the metro to downtown which stops near St. Louis College of Pharmacy, where we will be meeting. It is time to make your flight reservation and to let us know that you will be coming if you have not done so already.

Please plan to arrive on Wednesday, Jan 1, and leave after noon on Sunday, January 5. Here is the agenda:

Jan 2 We will conduct a Deliberately Developmental Organization (DDO) leadership workshop
Jan 3 We will work with a new definition of Process Education and conduct a review of IJPE papers
Jan 4 We will tackle Strategic Plan Development 2020-2025
Jan 5 We will hold an Academy Board Meeting (in the morning)

The Academy picks up the housing and food costs for the winter meeting. Anyone interested in a leadership role in the Academy should plan to attend.

Let us know if you'll be there!

(We'll save you some hot chocolate and marshmallows, but we need to know you'll be there!)

A Few Words from Our Servant Leader
Academy President
Joann Horton

The Academy of Process Educators is growing and changing – moving toward transforming itself to transform other environments. The Academy vision positions the organization as a "recognized leader in driving transformational change," guided by Process Education principles. American Architect Burnham suggests that we have large plans in work and life because that is what drives passion for change.

Big goals require growth and change. Yesterday, I talked to my sister Barb about her experience in her Interpersonal Relationships and Project Management class. She stressed that the course is exciting, challenging, and growth-oriented. She recognized that growth is not comfortable, but it is essential in order for her to achieve her big goal. The Academy is similarly adjusting to its growing pains in making transformational change.

So, what is the Academy’s Big Goal for 2019-2020?

I suggest that we consider this Big Goal: To model the transformative behavior of a learning organization. This goal encompasses operationalizing PE principles while working on our operational goals of self-growth, leadership, membership, and becoming a DDO (Deliberately Developmental Organization). At the end of this year’s journey, we should be able to demonstrate a unique transformative learning and growth model for others to follow. Perhaps we could share the Academy model via YouTube, in a TED talk, or…. I’m getting ahead of myself.

What do you think about this Big Goal? Can you be passionate about it? Do you have a different Big Goal for us to consider?  To paraphrase Andrew Carnegie, let us set a big goal that commands our thoughts, liberates our energy, and inspires our hopes. I look forward to hearing from you and continuing this journey together.

Creating and sustaining quality learning environments has been a passion of Process Educators for over twenty years. Taking a closer look at how these environments stimulate personal/professional growth and inspire learners is the theme of the 2020 PE Conference.

This event is co-sponsored by the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and will take place June 25-28, 2020. You will want to circle these dates on your calendar as the conference will again feature multiple venues for interactive exploration of Process Education best practices, tools, and research.

Conference threads include professional development workshops, research workshops, paper sessions, symposiums, and online sessions in addition to the popular Hall of Innovation poster session along with plenary sessions that foster community building.

Academy Culture Shift: Becoming a Deliberately Developmental Organization (DDO)

President Elect
Ingrid Ulbrich

As noted in the last newsletter, the Academy is becoming a Deliberately Developmental Organization, or DDO. What's that, you might ask? It's an organization where growth of the individual is as important as carrying out the standard missions of the organization. DDOs have three major characteristics.

•  They have a Quality Learning and operating Environment (Home) where everyone helps others grow with care and candor.

•  They challenge everyone to work just outside the Edge of their comfort zone — for us, in their Academy roles.

•  And they make these practices of cooperative growth part of their everyday operations — their Groove

Pull out your favorite reference for the Learning Process Methodology and learn more! There are DDO resources on the Bookshelf in the Academy Members Site (bottom shelf). I also recommend this podcast with Dr. Robert Kegan (Harvard Graduate School of Education), a researcher in adult development, adult learning, and professional development. Dr. Kegan found DDOs in industry, and has researched and reported on their practices and the amazing growth and shifts the organizations have made while prioritizing the growth of their employees.

It's 40 minutes, so just take it with you for your next commute, walk, or work out!

Dear Process Educators,

I have a cute little bamboo phone holder on my desk at home from the Academy of Process Educators. I like it. I have a closet full of bags from conferences, some of them very nice even if they are vinyl. I have key rings, clipboards, pens, and cell-phone accessories coming out of my ears. Or at least I did until I realized that I didn’t really want these things or have a use for them. I have some t-shirts that were bundled in with various conference attendance packages. But in my life as an academic, which is nearing its tenth anniversary I have never purchased anything with an academic organizational logo. I’ve bought clothing at the various universities where I’ve been employed, but nothing bearing the PE Academy, APEE, AoM, SMS, or USASBE logos. I don’t know if this is normal or not.

I’m in the process of contemplating what the Academy should be giving away as SWAG, and what we should be selling in an online store so that we can show pride in our association and spread the word. I’d like your help in this process. To that end I have a few questions I’d really like you to think about and answer (the form is here and it is anonymous Click me! Click me!!).

1.  What have you gotten for ‘free’ from an academic organization that you used for more than the length of the conference?

2.  What, if anything, have you purchased from a conference that carried the conference logo? Why did you make that purchase?

3.  Has any conference SWAG, free or paid for, generated a conversation that could have led to the association getting a new member?

In addition to your input I’ve been visiting other academic sites to see what is available for purchase. If you belong to an academic organization that has an online store please email me the link (or share it on the form) so I can check it out. Thank you all for your input. I look forward to when we have a store full of really cool stuff to show our Academy of Process Educators pride and share it with the world (and maybe make a little jingle for the academy in the process).

Self-Growth Institute 2020

Dan Apple

The Self-Growth Institute held Aug 5 – 9 was a great success! The intended outcomes of a learning performance improvement of 50%, an increase in personal growth rate of 15%, and self-growth capability of increase of 5% were accomplished by nearly all of the 17 participants. Personal transformation, positive life changes, the development of life plans, and significant gains in understanding learning-to-learn made this a very powerful experience. The Academy of Process Educators and Pacific Crest are teaming up again, co-sponsoring a Self-Growth Institute prior to the 2020 PE Conference.

Dan Apple’s Level of Commitment to the Self-Growth Community

This academic year 2019/2020 will have my whole focus on Self-Growth development process.

Over the last year I have dedicated at least 1,000 hours on the research, personal practice, development, coaching and creation of Self-Growth individually, within the PE community and organizationally. The research expands the following areas – 7 Principles of Student Learning and Success (Culture that supports growth); Performance Descriptions for Performance Development; Methodology for Self-Growth; Performance Framework; Barriers to Implementing L2L and Self-Growth; Methodology for Performance Development; Writing Performance Criteria; Interpretation of Assessment; Role of CLS in Performance Mentoring and Life Coaching Quality of Life. These papers have led to 10 new ideas for new papers. The PE conference had at least 15 different sessions on some aspect of growth and Self-Growth. From the Academic Recovery Courses and its research, the integration of Self-Growth is more integrated. Worked on upgrading the 2nd edition of L2L Becoming a Self-grower and the Self-Growth methodology is now integrated into the set of experiences. The Self-Growth community and the mentoring of people in the process along with designing and implementing the Self-Growth Institute.

This year my goal is to advance the Self-Growth Institute to make it 3 times the power of the amazingly powerful 1st time event in August. Review the Report on the Self-Growth Institute to explore how powerful the event was. I want to support current people who have been through the institute and/or through the Self-Growth community last year and a select few additional people who need to be part of this experience – 2nd year of the Self-Growth community (current and future leaders of the Academy).

Here is my personal commitment:

  1. Help you to increase your growth capability (Personal growth rate) by 15% this year
  2. Provide you with an effective life coach that will assist you with increasing your quality of life
  3. Provide you with a performance mentor in 3 key identified areas to grow performance by 25% in that area
  4. Model the process of annual growth and Self-Growth development
  5. Provide opportunity to apply your growth by helping the PE Academy in a significant role
  6. Help you become a significant player in PE Academy DDO initiative
  7. Facilitate the Self-Growth Institute before the PE Conference June 20 – 24, 2020

And here is what I am asking each member of the 50 members of the community to commit to this year: That you are:

  1. Willing to allocate space and time to prioritize Self-Growth and the Self-Growth of the PE Academy as a key component of your 2019/2020 activities.
  2. Willing to commit to self that you want to become a much stronger self-grower by the end of the academic year. You want to and desire to become the self-grower role model for your family, colleagues, students, and every person you meet.
  3. Willing to commit to the Self-Growth community by
    1. developing a personal growth plan for the year by October 15th;
    2. developing a Self-Growth plan for the year by November 1st
    3. playing a role within the Self-Growth community: new participant, performance mentor, or life coach;
    4. meeting online for at least 75% of the scheduled meetings (1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 8 pm eastern);
    5. working your two plans with a provided life coach and performance mentor in between the sessions;
    6. sharing two self-assessments monthly on progress of both plans;
    7. and maybe collaborating on at least one research project of interest.
  4. Willing to commit to the Academy of Process Educators by
    1. identifying a desired role that needs to be fulfilled in the Academy that will stretch current capabilities that will cause growth; /li>
    2. creating a plan of action for the role/project within the academy;
    3. using this opportunity as part of growth and Self-Growth plans;
    4. helping Wendy Duncan make the DDO initiative the strongest accomplishment/result the Academy has produced during any given year.
