Fostering Learner Success by Focusing on Self-Growth and Agency: Students, Teachers and the Institution

The Call for Conference Session Proposals and Registration for the Conference and Pre-Conference Workshop are now open to all current and prospective Academy members. Look to the Academy Website for conference details.

The 2022 AoPE Conference will include a blend of traditional Process Education methodologies with viewpoints inspired by the Virginia State University’s’ Metacognition Fellows. This team of talented faculty, administrators, and scholars has been actively involved in sharing what they have learned from their research. Utilizing an NSF grant, the VSU Metacognition Fellows efforts will allow participants to learn about practices for fostering student success that are embodied in the Conference Goals:

Conference goals:

  1. Addressing Agency in Teaching and Learning
  2. Methodologies and Measures for Learning and Self-Growth
  3. Bridging Gaps between Teaching Styles and Learning Styles
  4. Transformation of Mindsets in Learning and Self-Growth
  5. Strategies for Learning Success during COVID

The call for proposals will be open through March 5. The joint planning committee is currently searching for experienced Keynote Speakers who can address our theme while highlighting the need for all faculty, staff, administrators, and students to be encouraged to engage in this work of fostering student success.

While VSU will host this joint conference on their campus in Petersburg, the 2022 Conference will also be available for virtual participation.

The key dates are:

  • Panel Discussion Sessions — These 90-minute sessions will provide for a group to come together and design a symposium to address a specific aspect of one of the Conference Goals.
  • Practitioner Workshops — These 90-minute workshops provide an environment for participants to experience innovative, new, or current teaching, learning, and facilitation strategies related to conference themes.
  • Research Workshops — These workshops are 90-minute explorations of ongoing scholarship with an eye to advancing pertinent research (additional projects, collaboration, and publications).
  • Research Paper Sessions — These discussion-based sessions will include a selection of three papers focused on a particular theme.
  • Hall of Innovation (Poster Session) — Posters center on a specific teaching innovation or design that can be shared via brief video and a slideshow.

The Student Success Workshop is based on the premise that a relatively new, key role for educators in higher education is that of a mentor—one who fosters the growth and development of cognitive, social, and affective skills. Mentoring is critical for the student who aspires to take ownership of his or her own learning and become a self-grower. Self-growers develop strong self-assessment skills that help them to continually improve their own performance and ultimately mentor their own growth. A successful student is one who not only succeeds academically but also continues beyond college to develop skills that make success possible in both career and life.

Participant Benefits:

  • Learn to design and build effective learning teams and facilitate in a cooperative learning environment.
  • Learn to foster learner ownership and implement strategies for resistance to behavioral change.
  • Learn to create a learning environment where the practice of assessment consistently elevates performance.
  • Learn to facilitate active learning with timely and constructive interventions on key issues & skills.
