Conference planning continues to dominate the Board’s focus this past month. Members of the Conference Planning Team and Board continue to meet to complete the plans for the annual PE Conference coming up June 11, 12, 13 at the University of Indianapolis. There is also a 1-day Pre-Conference Workshop open to all Academy members.

We continue to receive proposals for potential breakout sessions, assessing them and returning those assessments to those who have proposed sessions. The deadline for sending a breakout session proposal is May 1. These sessions highlight innovative teaching methods, projects, and experiments seeking to deepen students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities. Presenting these will be a wonderful experience in the spectacular UIndy space reserved for the Hall if Innovation. It is complete with a dozen or more large screen TVs and conference tables where presenters and participants can interact real time with the HOI presenters and explore real -time questions from participants in-person and online.

Our Keynote Speaker Dr. David Leasure is preparing not only the keynote address “AI Goes to College” but also, an additional breakout session for those participants who want a deeper dive into the World of AI. As you may be aware the Conference season is filled with ideas about this new phenomenon many of them negative and suspicious about AI. As noted in an earlier newsletter this Keynote will focus more on the usefulness and advantages of AI.

Speakers Ingrid Ulbrich (Academy Past President) and Joshua Morrison (UIndy Director of Academic Retention Programs) are preparing to share a Plenary presentation focused on efforts to strengthen student outcomes by focusing on the of the efforts to improve student outcomes through academic preparation and student support programs, student retention and graduation rates are often poor, resulting in millions of students across the US with some college, no degree, and with student loans to repay. The University of Indianapolis (UIndy), partnering with PE experts, has responded by implementing two short courses geared toward improving student growth and learning through the principles of Process Education. University data show that students completing either course tend to outperform their peers in retention and persistence toward graduation. This session describes program and curriculum development, current assessment data, and will include discussions with students who have completed the courses.

As you can tell this will be a power-packed and lively Conference, even more so if YOU choose to join us. So, make plans and register now at: www.processeducation.org/peconf

Lodging information and a link to the Conference Hotel is also available on the Website. The hotel selected is right next to the UIndy Campus building where all of the Conference activities will be held.

I look forward to seeing many of you in June.

The purpose of the orientation is to prepare attendees for the conference. We will be giving a brief overview of Process Education, showing you how to access and navigate the conference support site, and answering any questions you may have. If this is your first PE conference, then attendance is recommended. If you are unable to attend, then look for a follow up email to all registered attendees with a link to the recording. If you have any questions before the orientation, feel free to email matthew.watts@rrcc.edu.

Plenary Session on June 12

Despite efforts to improve student outcomes through academic preparation and student support programs, student retention and graduation rates are often poor, resulting in millions of students across the US with some college, no degree, and with student loans to repay. The University of Indianapolis (UIndy), partnering with PE experts, has responded by implementing two short courses geared toward improving student growth and learning through the principles of Process Education. Each is an intense experience, combining learning to learn curriculum¹ ² with extended support and coaching. In one course, students who experienced academic failure are invited for an experience to reset their academic compass. In the second, incoming college students with challenged academic records get a fresh start at college success. University data show that students completing either course tend to outperform their peers in retention and persistence toward graduation. This session describes program and curriculum development, current assessment data, and will include discussions with students who have completed the courses.

This year's Hall of Innovation (HOI) will include both online and in-person presenters and attendees.

There will be an in-person HOI where presenters will create a slideshow to be displayed at the conference in UIndy.  In person attendees will be able to meet with and discuss these presentations at the dedicated HOI times. Online attendees will also have a chance to interact with these presenters over Zoom.

There will also be an online HOI curated by George Dombi (gdombi@uri.edu) using the Panopto video tool. The online presentations will also start with an abstract submission using the online submission form and a peer review selection process. Once the online proposal has been accepted, the author(s) will submit a video file (.mp4) of their slideshow with narration to George, who will serve as the “Coach" for helping to load the video into Panopto. The online presentations will be available for viewing anytime during the conference and accessed from the conference support site.

Academy members can submit their Hall of Innovation proposals now by completing the form HERE. If you need details on the proposal guidelines, they're available on this page.

The Panopto tool allows for archiving of submitted video presentations. Online presenters should expect that their accepted video presentation will become part of the PE archive and may be shown at future PE meetings unless the author(s) expressly forbids archiving of their work. Authors will retain the right to remove their video from the archive at any time by sending an email to George. Archived presentations may appear in a future Hall of Innovation for a later PE conference and could also be used for Professional Development programming as well as other needs to be identified later. Currently George has possession of the HOI presentations from Conferences in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 which are saved and can be moved in the academy site for historical preservation and potential access by any member 24/7.

The Academy of Process Educators IN the Faculty Guidebook:

Did you know?

...This group of educators evolved into ‘pioneers,’ hungry to establish solid roots. They wanted knowledge and practices that could evolve as others built upon what they had learned. They recognized the benefit of a shared community experience. The pioneers identified two tangible resources for building their new community. First, they wanted a place in which to publicly share their scholarly writings so that they could be assessed by peers and shared with others in order to expand the community. This resulted in development of the Faculty Guidebook, an publication that shares an increasing amount of new knowledge related to teaching and learning. The second resource that the pioneers are developing is the Academy of Process Educators. They hold a conference each summer that offers a space for networking, sharing research in the practices of teaching and learning while it is still in the formative stage, receiving peer assessment of new ideas, and sharing best practices.

The Academy of Process Educators has identified five roles that are viewed as primary for an educator. These are represented by the five nodes in the star diagram that appears on the front cover of the Faculty Guidebook. These roles provide an organizational framework for the sections in this book.

  • Enhance Learning & Scholarship

An educator facilitates higher levels of learning (knowledge construction) using Bloom’s Taxonomy, emphasizing integrated performance and problem solving rather than memorization.

  • Foster Learner Development

An educator mentors learners, helping them improve their learning performance by growing a set of transferable learning skills. The mentor assists this process using facilitation skills that include assessment, diagnosis, and intervention.

  • Nurture Self-Growth

An educator encourages students to reflect and improve their self-assessment skills so that students can self-mentor their own growth.

  • Invest in Professional Development

Educators must become master teachers by acquiring competencies that are identified as part of the desired repertoire. Examples of these include assessment, creating measures of effectiveness, using learning theory, creating enriched learning environments, designing instruction, conducting research, and modeling good team membership.

  • Expand Institutional Effectiveness

As institutions are held ever more accountable for measuring and demonstrating their effectiveness, individual educators must become systems thinkers who contribute to the overall credibility of their institutions.

As these educational pioneers gained experience and confidence, they found themselves better able to create more self-sustaining settlements in their respective institutions. This can be seen in stronger connections with colleagues who are now actively seeking new ways of teaching and learning and are willing to invest energy in institutional reform. There is also a fresh openness to teaching and learning innovation among newly-hired colleagues. The growth of these communities of scholars promises long-term transformation in their respective institutions.
